The WHS bricklaying trowel was originally started in 1793 and the initials stand for William Hunt & Sons of Brades Steel Works. The trowel become a national treasure amongst the great British bricklayers in 1951 the company was bought out ending the WHS era.
The bricklaying man abbreviated the initials WHS to work hard or starve and the phrase has been commonly used as a motivation to this day since 1793.
Through hard times, recessions, revolutions the bricklaying trade hasn’t changed and is one that requires the gentlemen to work hard, be honest and always apply true craftsmanship.
Now Dean known as The Traditional Bricklayer brings the phrase to work hard or starve to trade mark to keep its value and honesty to the bricklaying trade.
“Gentlemen today we move, tomorrow our worth will be recognised“
